To My Family,
Today, August 25, 2006 is my Mother's 90th Birthday,
even though she passed a few weeks ago, this day is a
celebration of life, for my Mother gave life, lived life to
the fullest and spread her goodness to everyone that
was ever around her.
My memories are like all my family that have had their
lives enriched by Tillie (Tybee) Elovitz Portman.
From Chicago to Los Angeles her touchings to us
live on forever in our hearts. I remember being told
about stopping at the drug store on the way home from
High School, she and friends would get a sandwich
that consisted of a roll that would have a device that
pushed into the roll and dispensed hot creamy cheese.
The simple things in life were the best.
I want to thank everyone in our family for the wonderful
remembrances we have all had with my Mom. As was
said to me, it will take awhile to settle down for myself,
and I'm finding this true and realize this, for I have been
taking care of her for probably 7 years, 3 years moving back into
the home I grew up in, and the last 3 months intense care.
She wanted to be in her home. She was not suffering,
just kept going as long as she could, for me, us, herself.
I made a little web page with my rememberances, pictures
and also am including what is sent to me from all of you.
Cousin Marshall sent a 1935 photo and story. Years ago
he also sent a video from old movies which I will find
and put up portions soon. I will be moving out of the
home I thrived and learned in, in North Hollywood. We
will be selling it, but I have all the memories in my heart,
in photos and videos forever. Those memories are 100%
of my Mother giving and giving, helping and helping,
loving and loving.
Sincerely
Louis Elovitz

I AM SORRY TO ANNOUNCE
MY MOM HAS PASSED AWAY July 28 2006
TILLIE ELOVITZ
1916 - 2006
{ NOTE: The DAILY NEWS obit very anti-semitic it its report
by saying 'zionist' organization,
my Mom was a calligrapher writing members names on awards
for service to the women's organization }
Published in the
Los Angeles Daily News on 8/1/2006.TILLIE ELOVITZ Age 89, resident
of North Hollywood. Born 08/25/1916in Chicago, Illinois, passed away
07/29/2006 at her home.

a Special Education Aide for LAUSD.

Women's Zionist Organization of America,
as well as her meditation group; Rada Soami.
She is survived by her sons, Louis and Leo;
as well as four grandchildren,

ANGELENO VALLEY MORTUARY
My Mother, Tillie Elovitz
has lived in NORTH HOLLYWOOD
for over 60 years.
She was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1916
from immigrant parents of Ukraine Russia.
She attended L.A. Valley College in the
1950's and was a Special Education Aide
for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Her broad interests included knitting and
meditation with the Rada Soami Society.
Of course my Mother introduced me
to North Hollywood. We would spend a lot
of time at Valley Plaza or RATHBUN'S on
Lankershim and Chandler, a small department
store. Rathbun's was on the property between
the North Hollywood Post Office and the Bank
Building at Weddington.
In my early days we would go to MAY CO
at Fairfax and Wilshire. After the soon to be
destroyed "Laurel Plaza" MAY CO was built
in the 1950's, which has 5 stories underground,
she would always take my brother Leo and
myself and she would shop as we went crazy
playing all over the departments...
When my Mom went to Valley College we
would tag along, the oiled dirt parking lots.
My Mom loved and studied the Theater Arts.
I went there too probably because she had.
As far as my k-12 schooling my Mom always
helped out with the PTA, Cub Scouts when
we were at Victory Blvd. Elementary.
All these places in North Hollywood that
I have been writing about, and will continue
to write about, were introduced to
me through her flights through the Valley
with my Mom in my early years.
AND Sunland Tujunga is in this mix also.
My Dad and Uncle had some small women's
wear stores in L.A. and the last one was in
the Sunland Shopping Center, where Rick's
Hallmark Store is now. Where, next store,
there was a Newberry's 5 (five)& Dime,
like a 99cent store then, which also had a
fountain restaurant.
My Mom would come and help do sales
at this store, it was the Sixties and the
PIG FARM brought HIPPIES to ST way
way before Haight Ashbury!
When my Mom worked as a Special
Education Aide that took her to different
parts of the East Valley working at
different schools.
Belonging to different
groups always kept her around town with
her meetings being TOPS, OA
or Rada Soami Meditation group.
I remember going to Dr. Singer, her
Chiropractor's houses right next
to CAMBRIDGE MARKET on Burbank.
He was a Chiropractor, we would play with his
toy poodles and intercoms that were fashioned
into old crank phones. He also owned the
apartments next store, still there, the front
used in many TV SHOWS - " CLOUD 9 "...

Dear Louis,
I am so sorry to hear about mom,
please accept my most sincere condolences.
I haven't met you, my name is Marshall Miles, your mother was
my first cousin and I have many many fond memories. She treated me
like a kid brother (I'm eight years younger) and I worshipped her.
On June 16, 1935 Sarah and Abe Needelman celebrated their
25th wedding anniversary in Chicago. (I presume you remember them,
they lived in Boyle Heights and they were your mom's aunt and uncle).
Anyhow, I have a photo taken at that affair and have attached
a copy of a small part to this e-mail. Top row, left to right...me, aunt Florence, your mother.
At the bottom center...your grandmother Rose and grandfather Sam Portman.
I hope your'e getting along OK, accept my kindest regards,
Marshall

'SHMALTZ'
&
TILLIE'S chicken fat
'SHMALTZ'
chicken fat
While one might think
'shmaltz'
means to be flashy,
it is really just chicken fat
rendered down, usually after the cooling
process of our chicken soup [above].
After cool down our SOUP should have
a beautiful yellow layer of chicken fat
rendered down from our cooking .
SKIM OFF this yellow layer
this is the 'SHMALTZ'.
but wait...
we are not finished!!!
Now, dice up some onions very thin,
and put them in a sauce pan adding
a little 'shmaltz'
and cook the onions down slowly
caramelizing
then add all the rest of the 'shmaltz'
and cook slowly for a while.
cook down put in bowl and in fridge.
Like butter or margarine,
SPREAD on MATZOH or cracker,
add a little salt.

MY MOMLET US DOhelicoptersand Coca Cola... IN NOHO !
up up and away...
I PERSONALLY KNOW
OF ONE AIRPORT IN
NORTH HOLLYWOOD,
and I grew up hearing
of another, both near
each other,
at different times.
When I grew up an older friendDavid Kennedy, said his Dad had
flown his airplanes landing in the
WASH that is now the 170 where
his house was approximately in
the area of Laurel Cyn and Burbank NE near the WASH.
Movie Theater former
Alexander's Market
My Mom would always take us to shop. One area was
VALLEY PLAZA, or as she would jokingly call it,
"Valley Pleasure" the part SW of Sears by the Theater
which was an ALEXANDER'S MARKET.
Oh, the COKE MACHINE in this market on those hot
Valley days would dispense a bottle of COKE, 8oz,
that was so cold the first drinks were COKE SLUSH.
VIctory Van Owen park
In Valley Plaza
The large parking lot is the same today leading to that
part of Victory Van Owen Park which WAS/IS on both
sides of the WASH/170FWY. The WASH was great
all that sand, and on the other side there was a slanting
concrete wall that we would get a piece of corrugated box
throw some sand and sliiiide!
Basically Victory Blvd
and Laurel Cyn
In 1957 (I looked it up on the web) L.A. Airways
paved a landing circle and road from Victory Blvd
to have a helicopter mail stop, which a man in a
station wagon would come and pick up US Mail.
My best friend Richard and I once took a passenger
trip on the noisy Korean Era helicopter leaving
VALLEY PLAZA going to Van Nuys, LAX,
Down Town L.A. and Burbank Airport
(BOB HOPE AIRPORT
originally LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT)
a very noisy but exciting flight.
SO, there you are
2 (TWO) airports in NOHO,
TOLD YA!.
